Seems old systems with plain steel tanks used less water. Or is that just happy memory ?

    No...

The O in H2o does get expelled, but it also replaces itself in mother natures efforts to avoid imbalance. So, the short answer to your question is no, air removal, versus air recovery doesn't remove fluid from the system to any appreciable degree. There are a host of other gasses in the water.

The biggest problem with non captive expansion tanks is the lack of understanding that you can't have any auto vents ANYWHERE in the system. Set up correctly, I have found the old ceiling hung tanks to be relatively maintenance free. I should qualify that statement with the need to have an Airtrol fitting on the tank to keep the recovered air from migrating out of the tank.

It's not so much a case of "You got what you paid for", as it is a matter of "You DIDN'T get what you DIDN'T pay for, and you're NOT going to get what you thought you were in the way of comfort". Borrowed from Heatboy.
