    Weight

Yeah the weight the scale at the scrapyard says.

    Combustion

Test should do it. Probably low 80's

    Checked my records

on that boiler system combustion efficiency is in the area of 70 to 72% if in good shape. The finned coils if corroded or in any type of disrepair will be in the range of 60%. I have the documented combustion readings to support these figures.

    Efficiency

Remember guys - when You are doing a combustion test it is COMBUSTION efficiency not AFUE efficiency.

If the heat exchanger is clean inside and outside it should have close to the factory rating for efficiency. Most RAYPAC boilers were 80%.

    Modulating versus non modulating...

I've seen the efficiency low like Tim has, with the Modutrol modulating gas valve, and low 80's for the Bang Bang boiler like Uncle John's seen.

The problem with the modulating gas valve is that it doesn't modulate the secondary air, and the excess air carries off a lot of the heat.

Bang bang short cycles so much, that you end up with an AFUE that looks like the low 70's. The heat exchanger works great in reverse...

Converting to a mod con wil reduce the energy consumption by 30%, minimum.
