reset ratio?

Can anyone explain to me what a reset ratio setting is? Or direct me to a

good article explaining it? I get that it has to do with the outside

temp dictating how much the boilers have to heat the water to compensate

for increased heat loss at colder temps. What I don't understand is how

this is generally figured.

What got me wondering is I am on my

second winter as the licensed overseer of the boilers at the apartment

complex I work at. I think I have a pretty good handle on everything

except the settings of the microprocessor controller.

There are

three setting knobs. One for temperature set point (in degrees F), One

for reset ratio (in ratios ex: 1:1 etc..) and one for control band.

I should also mention that the system consists of 6 Slant/Fin Caravan gas fired boilers.

My

predecessor was also somewhat bewildered by the system and treated it

like a simple aquastat, as he told me to turn up the temp set point knob

as it got colder outside. This, however, makes no sense to me since the

system is supposed to automatically compensate for this, which, for the

most part, it does. I should be able to set if and forget it, no?

So

in a nut shell, I think the settings must all be screwed up by this

point, and I want to figure out where I should set them back to. So.... Is this something I can figure out with a little more research and the control module's manual? Or will I

need to call in a professional?
