Best Practices for Install!

I will soon be having my new boiler installed in my 2-pipeTrane VaporVacuum system and would like to ensure it's installed in the best possible way. Obviously, this includes following the instructions to the letter, but I'm referring to those things above and beyond the basic manual. This would include such things as dropped header, no copper. a good place to drain sediment, specific brand of things to use, probe vs.float LWCO. making sure to keep the water line the same. There seem to be so many things that help make an install great. I'm working with a professional plumber with experience installing steam, but not an expert so I'm left providing the guidance for this sort of thing.
I'm sure other homeowners could benefit from such a list as well.
Everyone here has been such a help troubleshooting my system. It will be great incorporating everything on this install and then I'll work on tweeking it for best performance.

Have them put a nipple
and cap full size of the boiler return opening in so that the boiler can be flushed out without leaving a puddle in it which happens when guys reduce the size of the return with a bushing.gwgillplumbingandheating.com

I am sure you saw this video before
It was very helpfull to me. I especially liked the segment on King Valves. Saves a lot of time and money at maintenance time.

Great video!
Thanks! I have NOT seen this, and now I'm wondering what other gems I've missed on this site. My personal comp (old Mac) doesn't like flash, so usually I have to use another computer to watch video.
I've been depending on the comfort-calc. website to explain proper near boiler piping, but this really helped. FInally know what a King valve is and where it goes as well as the mud leg. I'd never heard of the condensate drain, so something else to investigate. Now if only I could wrap my head around the false water line!

Over the years
I have been reading some of your past posts. I must admit that when it comes to 2-pipe vapor, I don't have much to add. As you say, the boiler is on its last legs, the system likely is in need of a tune-up, and all this is installed in what I would call a very grand home. In my mind, I picture your home to be similar in size and grandiosity to http://www.heatinghelp.com/forum-thread/131216/The-Best-Heating-System The trouble is, it's difficult to repair one thing without effecting another.
Have you considered flying in one of the Pro's for a day or two, to consult with you and your local steam guys? They likely would be able to save you a lot of headaches.0 -

Cincinnati!
I'm in Cincinnati! Only 41/2 hrs from Chicago and 5 from Cleveland driving. Unfortunately, a little further from Baltimore:( Well, It is a large home, but not nearly as large as the Best home and not as beautiful in that old wordly way, but I like it and I'm not moving anytime soon. 'm open to a consult, but I'll have to check with the other out-of town owner. If it's a go, I'll have to get busy cleaning out my disaster of a basement and garage! Whew, talk about panic mode!
