Funny place for a shower!
I believe there was an expansion tank and the attic and the device you see helped maintain the correct level. There is a similar device in one in one of Dan's books, "how come"? There are not many "live men" that know how to operate that!"If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough"

That's a Honeywell Heat Generator
or another, similar brand, which allowed the pressure to rise enough so the water in that system could run hotter than the usual 180° F. It discharges into the expansion tank, which is above the ceiling.
If you take that out, be VERY careful since the lower part is filled with mercury. All Steamed Up, Inc.

Hope this link shows up.0 -
Goofed
Link did not work so here is part of data. 25 to 30 lbs, thats a lot!
HONEYWELL HEAT GENERATORS
If a Honeywell heat generator is encountered in a home and needs to be removed, it should be removed in a manner that ensures no mercury is released from the unit. These units generally hold between 25 and 30 pounds of mercury.
First, remove the unit from the home intact, as seen in the photo below. Then place the unit into a large plastic bag, always keeping the unit in a vertical position. Take the unit to your local household hazardous waste facility or hire a professional environmental consulting company, both of which have trained personnel who can handle and dispose of mercury appropriately.

Not that I've ever seen...
The most I've ever gotten out of these devices was a baby food jars worth. Maybe 5 pounds worth.

Shocked!
I am shocked that the EPA would have false info in their data. Oh no, now my tongue is stuck in my cheek!
