    The best comment I've seen

was that the only "magic" was how quickly your money disappeared into their account.

    Now you see it.

                                        Poof!

                                                        Now you don't.

    Ask my wife

She still hears from their sales people every now and then. We signed up with them for a two month period. Nothing came of it other than a few grand in their pockets. Very aggressive sales people too.

    In short stay away.
  • It sounds as though

they should do some real magic and disappear.

How do you spend so much money and not get results?

I have no personal experience, but...

A good friend of mine did try their services when he was first starting his business. They require a credit card number, and every time someone logs in and registers themselves as being "interested" in the services provided, they tag your CC.

He called and complained, and they refused to credit his account. He said their vetting process was seriously flawed, and they were quick on the trigger to charge his card.

I think he eventually dropped them.

Funny thing about this post, no one is making any positive comments towards the service...

    A google search came up with this;

    Buyer, beware.

    different perspective

As HO I have had two small jobs done very well by Service Magic contractors, though the contractors were not too enthused about having to pay the commissions. In both cases I would use them again. At best service magic has the potential to connect contractors for whom business is slow with customers needing their skills. I try to give very specific job details in the provided box so I won't waste anyone's time. For every HO request, three companies are contacted, so right away two are going to lose out. But I keep them on my list for future work. I wonder how these commissions compare with the costs of running Yellow Pages ads.

I don't know what safeguards are present or missing with Service Magic to prevent contractors from getting useless leads, and can only say that the two people I hired seemed to live up to their credentials. I know on the internet there are horror stories of unfair commissions and seemingly unvetted contractors. I still have to do what I always do with jobs: research enough to ask the right questions of potential contractors. In one case my regular local sewer guy did a really bad job of clearing my sewer so that it clogged again in a month. (He used the wrong blade and didn't clear it completely.) Service M guy came and was very thorough and took his time and came all the way from the Bronx. Because I could somewhat clearly describe the problem he took a risk and gave me a price over the phone and he was out of here in less than an hour.

At the moment I'd trust this service more than Angie's List where there's no way to verify that any of the feedback is real.

    Magic

The only Magic I experienced was how the leads were supposed to be qualified but magically they were only kickin the tires. Oh and further more how even though I would contact my new leads within 5 minutes, they mostly just wanted pointers on how to do it themselves. Then money would magically be withdrawn from my account! What a scam, just as much if not more competition than conventional ways of getting jobs. There is no way to sell you, which should be the deciding factor all things being equal.

    Service Magic works...

I've been with Service Magic since they started. Overall, I'd say it's been a positive relationship. From my perspective with 47 years in the trade and business owner for 35 years. Every year I see customers drop off my customer list for various reasons, most of which are people moving. In order to stay in business I need to find new customers and how am I going to do that? Yellow Pages; no, too much money for far too little gain. TV adds; not cost effective either. Word of mouth; good, but not good enough. Company web page; better, but still need more results. Direct mail; another poor return on investment.

Contractor referrals are by far the best return on my advertising dollar. I have fine tuned my jobs criteria and target only the locations that I want and the type of jobs I make the most on. Sure, I get a lot of "tire kickers"  and the ones "checking their contractors pricing", but I only have to land one boiler job and covered months worth of lead costs. The best part... I now have a long term customer, who will give me referrals. These are jobs (and friends) that I otherwise wouldn't have.

It's an advertising tool that you either make work for you or against you, for me it works real good.

I used them when I first started out.  I got a lot of leads and looked at a lot of jobs but didn't get that many.  I tried it again a couple of years ago just for water heaters and out of about 10 leads I got 0 jobs.  I think you have to be very low with your pricing to get any work from them and you have to call the customer back within a couple of minutes of receiving the lead.  I don't think it's worth it and I wouldn't do it again.
