    clearances

in Maine you need 18" clearances on 6" smoke pipe.

So you would need in Maine

    a hole through combustibles of 18 + 18 = 36" + the 6' flue or a total of 42" that is one big hole?

Or did you mean a 6" with 6" clearance on each side for a hole 18"?

    18" from any combustible surface.

In the state of Maine it is 18" from the surface of the smoke pipe to any combustible surface.  Straight line measurement.  This is for single wall smoke pipe.
