What do you think of this idea? See any problems with it?

    That

fine mesh filter will clog with lint quickly. Then you lose any savings you might have gained. It's also good that the unit can withstand high temperatures, so it will survive the lint fires.

    Not a good idea...

For someone who doesn't understand all of the dynamics of heating appliances, it looks like a GREAT idea, but...

As previously stated, and based on comments on the web site FOR this product, it appears that maybe the lint screen has been permanently removed, indicating to me that the inventors have "discovered" on e of the dangerous problems associated with the application of this device. Lint. Lint fires account for 15,000 fires per year.

In other app's (DHW tank) it will rob too much heat out of the flue gasses, and those gasses will condense, causing rotting and eventual failure of the flue pipe, allowing products of combustion to leak into the house, possibly causing death due to carbon monoxide.

There are other products, and have been many of these devices on the market, and none of them are legal and approved by the code authorities for application in the field.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings...

    intelligent controller

Maybe with some additional development he can produce something that works safely.  Unfortunately the independent testing will take for more money than what he has raised.

I think the idea of an intelligent controller is interesting.  Connected to a HWH, for example, it could bet set not to bring the flue gas temp below 160.

Perhaps an external lint filter just prior to the exchanger?
