Furnace Filter Slot

Hi

I have a gas forced air furnace and the slot where the furnace filter is inserted is uncovered. Should I seal the top with tape or something or leave the slot uncovered?

Thanks for your advise.

    If the filter

is really the right one for the application, it should be a reasonably tight seal once it's put in there.  You can cover the slot with tape or something -- it won't hurt anything -- but it shouldn't need it (you shouldn't be able to feel air either coming in or coming out!).

Keep in mind that with scorched air you're going to want to change or clean that filter pretty regularly...

Any time you have an opening in the return ductwork, there is the risk that the furnace blower will draw in exhaust air from the mechanical area. It should be sealed, if only for safety concerns.
