    smelly rads

what sort of smell is there-chemical, petrochemical, paint, rotten?

are these newly made or just new to you?

some smells may come from the rest of the system. --nbc

    Gradual

I had a new cast iron baseboard installed almost a year ago and I still get a little smell but usually only noticeable when the full length of the baseboard is heated. The smell has gradually gotten better since installation..

    Smell will eventually go away

I installed a large cast iron radiator which I had constructed from 2 salvaged radiators, taken apart an reassembled as one.  I painted it with dark bronze spray paint at the time, in January of 2009.  When connected to steam it made a pretty strong paint off gassing smell.  This subsided within the first week, but was detectable for quite some time.  It was probably close to a year later before there was no detectable odor whatsoever.  However, I have a pretty sensitive nose.  The radiator is located in the entrance hall of a house/apartment conversion.  None of the tenants complained or even commented.

I have had much shorter "smelly time" with other radiators painted with the same brand and color of paint.
