Richardson system and air expeller

I am restoring a Richardson system, with the ball check return elbows. Some of the balls are missing, but I have found replacements. I will have to add a few steam traps on radiators that have been messed with.
My question is about the air expeller. I assume that it had a check valve, since the Richardson system was a vapor vacuum system.
Have any of you come up with a way to have a main air vent with a check that works to form a vacuum in the returns?
