Can anyone suggest a snubber or damper for the vapourstat on my system? The vapourstat is on the drop header, on a nice brass pigtail. The problem is that it bounces a lot -- and often bounces to off when it shouldn't (and yes, I've checked that the pressure does oscillate -- but not that much). What I'm thinking of is a nice little gadget to fit on the pigtail at one end or the other (I don't care!) which will damp out the pressure variations which the 'stat thinks it is seeing...
Thanks!
Thanks!

Snubber
Hi Jaime- The Gauge Store also has them at least that's where I got mine. Type "Ray Snubber" in the Find window and make sure it is selected for "text"
They have two types - Piston and Porous. On the porous type - Make sure you have the right one for gas /steam. I got the stainless porous one- Part # 32627 - (cheaper than the piston type.though I'd be curious how well a piston one works if you decide to go with one) They have it available in brass also. The only thing I've been concerned with is that it may rapidly plugup with crud. I extended my pigtail higher because of this fear and I check it regularly - So far,so good. I'm going to extend the inspection times a bit more this winter and see whether there is any clogging over time.

snubbed
if you go with the brass porous .. make sure you get the steam rated one here:
http://www.gaugestore.com/prodinfo.asp?number=32618
there is another brass one exactly the same price, but it is not steam rated .. actually, none of the pistons specifically say steam ..
the one i linked above (and below by Rod in stainless) are the only ones that say steam.1-pipe Homeowner - Queens, NYC

Stainless Snubber
JPF- LOL....You had me worried there for a moment. I usually check that type of thing very carefully but your post had me wondering if I could have ordered it during a "senior moment" so I went back and checked! The Stainless # 32627 is approved for steam. http://www.gaugestore.com/prodinfo.asp?number=32627
I don't know whether stainless is really any better than brass and I'm not overly happy about attaching stainless to a red brass pigtail, it just that I've had problems before with brass corroding when used as a fine strainer and exposed to moisture. (this trouble wasn't with a steam fitting)

sorry .. i missed that one
sorry Rod, i must have missed clicking on that one .. same price and all yes .. it indeed says Steam. i will edit above.1-pipe Homeowner - Queens, NYC

Thanks guys!
a brass porous is on its way (dang shipping was more than the doodad! sigh...)
I figured you guys would know... when it comes I'll put it on -- maybe able to put the ol' 'stat back down to 8 oz again! (it's up to 10 oz -- high pressure! now)Br. Jamie, osb

Snubber
If you don't need a snubber to suppress pressure oscillations, I wouldn't use one as they tend to clog easily. That's why they have the needle and piston type snubber. It moves back and forth to keep the orifice open. I've only seen them used for fluids so that was why I went with the porous type for steam as I'm not quite sure how well the piston type would work with a gas.

i used to chatter...
my v-stat used to chatter a great deal after tripping .. i found that by tweaking the jewelers screw slightly the chatter went away. just an fyi.1-pipe Homeowner - Queens, NYC
