Can you increase the performance of a 41 gallon amtrol indirect heater by increasing the size of pipe or increase circulator or both?

    Need more info

What is the Btu output of your boiler? What size pump (make & model) and piping do you have?

The answer may be yes if the boiler's full capacity is not being utilized and if increasing the flow rate doesn't exceed 4ft. per second.

    Flow vs. Temperature

Flow is not a very effective variable. You can double your flow (and increase your pressure drop by a factor of over three and your pump power by a factor of over eight), yet get less than 10% more capacity.

The best variable is temperature, increasing the temperature 20 degrees, say from 160 to 180F, and get about 20-25% more heat transfer, in rough terms. (The temperature differences in the process always move/vary; they start out high and diminish as the tank comes up to maximum temperature, which is why this is a qualified answer.) But you get the idea.

As Ironman said, you need to know your boiler output capacity and your line size vs. flow rate. Having the Amtrol rating tables is also essential.

    Re: capacity of indirect

If you find you are lacking hot water, 2 things, increase boiler temp to say 180 to help recovery, 2nd, install thermostatic mix valve on hot out and increase stored temp to say 150 or even 160. This will give you much more stored energy in the hot water tank. Good luck, Tim  Ps, hi Brad

of max water temps on tanks, Warranty will be void trying to increase output by cranking it up and using a mixing valve.
