Hartford Loop - How far is too far away ?

This was an emergency install we did on Friday . And let me tell ya .......... locating a complete Burnham V9 4 section in less than 24 hours on Long Island is an ordeal to say the least . But our supply house went above and beyond ........... they hired an outside trucking co. to pick up all the parts from 3 different supply houses , and had all the equipment at the jobsite before noon .

This was the most corroded steamer I've ever seen . We'll be back to look around for steam leaks Monday while we flush and skim the boiler . I'll be adding another pressuretrol , probe LWCO and a small water meter .

It's hard to see , but the original piping had the equalizer and Hartford Loop on the wrong end of the boiler main . We cut all that out and utilized the 2nd equalizer at the end of the boiler main , which is about 5 feet away from the boiler . I'm wondering how far is too far for the Equalizer and HL to be from the unit ? Was running fine for the hour or so we were there while it was steaming .  But at 8 pm on a Friday and the 4 of us exhausted ............. I wasn't exactly thinking about it at the time :)

Don't you just love customers who,

put off maintenance to save money. How did they miss the corrosion during routine clean outs? Probably by skipping them completely. Just my observation, oil fired heating system kind of negates using this end of the basement for living space, so why is the water heater installed right up against the boiler? I bet you guys had a lot of fun on that install working around the water heater. For any homeowners on this site, this guy is a hero.

There was an error rendering this rich post.

    What a disaster

    that was!  Good job, Ron!!!

As to where the Hartford loop is -- it really shouldn't make that much difference, so long as the horizontal nipple isn't too long and it's nicely equalised.  The only problem with having it farther away is that there is more pipe to corrode and potentially leak which is unprotected, but... what the heck.  I don't see that as a problem, myself!

    Shouldn't be a problem

The original boiler was probably placed lengthwise under the header and the H-loop was at the rear of it. Bet it works much better with that piping job!
