Troubleshooting Fireplace

I remember reading somewhere, the correct way to troubleshoot/test thermopiles. I am also interested in the correct procedure for testing a LP gas valve on a Vermont Castings freestanding fireplace. Can someone help point me in the correct direction ?
I have a customer with the Fireplace and the pilot stays lit, but when the knob is turned to the on position, the pilot goes out instantly. I suspect the coil in the gas valve. Would this act this way if the orifice is blocked ?

e-mail at gastc@cox.net and I can give you some direction as to your questions. You will need to take some millivolt readings. When you contact me have the make and number of the gas valve used on the fireplace.0
