25 - 30,000 btu gas direct vent wall heater question

I got 2 quotes to replace an old one that has the outside vent mounted about 12" directly below a window that opens. One place says it's ok to replace and leave it in the same spot (cheaper quote) and the other says that it cannot be mounted below a window that opens (much more expensive quote).

I'm considering a Cozy or Williams model of the btu stated in the title.

I've referred to the manuals of each but am completely new to this and still having trouble telling if below the window is prohibited in all cases.

here are the manuals:

Can these be mounted below a window provided that they meet the minimum clearance requirements or can they not be mounted below a window period?

I didn`t read ALL the manuals,,,,,, but I do not see how that small size could create a prob.

I would check with your local utility to be sure though!
  • Clearances

On page 4, dimension B shows minimum clearance to a operable window.  If you're in Canada, it's 12" and if you're in the US, it's 9".  Sometimes it's better being a Canuk.
    8.33 lbs./gal. x 60 min./hr. x 20°ΔT = 10,000 BTU's/hour

Two btu per sq ft for degree difference for a slab
  • YO Alan!

Cold climates sometimes have their advantages!  ;-)

    How are you ?

    Direct vent appliances

have different requirements for distances from windows than mechanical exhausted appliances.

Yours being a direct vent can be within 9" of a window as it is under 50,000 BTU's, if over 50,000 it would have to be 12" clearance.

Mechanical exhausting equipment must be 4 feet from any windows, doors or openings.

    Local Codes

While the manufacturers installation instructions are a vital part of the process you have to start with what is allowed.  Do you have a State or Local code?

NFPA54 The National Fuel Gas Code says for a direct vent appliance 10,001 to 50,000 btu's the  clearance below a openable window is 9".  For Connectciut where I live this is Code.  Find out what code is in your area.  If you still have questions sent me a note @ henrycu@cox.net
