How to make soldered seam in 3 inch copper steam pipe a permanent repair?

Comments

  • Seam

What made-it let go in the first place?
Is it the right type for this application?
I would say replacing it would be the only permanent solution. :-)

    braze

YOU could braze if it not too long. more than a foot , forget it just replace. an old timer could probably solder it with a hatchet iron. i know i could but it is not feasable from any point of view.

By replace, do you mean cutting out problem section and attaching new copper pipe with couplings?

Does anyone have an opinion on repair resins or putties applied to circumference of soldered seam?

    Yup...

I do have an opinion. For low pressure, on cast iron, some repair resins and putties do work. Sometimes. On a soldered copper seam? I very much doubt it.

I'd replace it and be done with it.

    Iron Pipe

When copper pipe is used on a proper instaled steam header , the flash of steam with a off even thermal expansion will crack a sweated joint.

Iron pipe is used because it has a little give if needed at the threaded joints ...

There was an error rendering this rich post.

  • why not just

Why not just do it as the others say.. Repiped it properly with iron pipings and be done with it..
