rather than lose this potential solution in the original 'challenge' post; maybe i'm missing something, but if you're saying that removing the nips is a problem, i may have a solution

and, i seem to recall burnham selling replacement nips

    I do not think the nips are correct size for old american Rococo

    rads. If you have a good solution for removal, lets hear it...
  • guessing that the problem

    is rust/age etc, and the typical removal problem/solution with any threaded joint, penetrating oil/torch heat; do the oil, but take your nip wrench and attach it to an impact wrench. i adapt my rigid r6300 for everything, and sometimes operating it in both directions, loosening and tightening, for very tough threads. on the most recent toughie, i forget right now what it was, but after oil and torch, i had to loosen/tighten 8 times before it finally broke loose and unthreaded
