Can anyone identify this mystery steam device? I'm stumped.

Looks a bit like a separator/receiver or trap?

I've seen that...

somewhere... in one of Dan's catalogues in the library. Hoffman catalogue, maybe? Tried looking there?

It's an air trap

which was used as a dry return vent on a Vapor system. The vent opening on top usually had a vacuum check screwed into it.

That is a 0023 size (1\")

Warren Webster Vent Trap and did what Steamhead says it did. Looks like it has seen better days!

Why was a trap needed. Why not just install a checked vent ?

The air trap

also had a float in it, to keep water from escaping. But it didn't shut on temperature. It was assumed the radiator traps would keep steam out of the dry returns.
