A furnace or a boiler. Boiler for water, or steam and furnace for hot air?

    wire them

in parallel. That is, connect each one back to the boiler's controller as though it were the only one on the system. That way, either one can turn the boiler on.

    Two stats-one system?

Rather a goofy question and the only rational way to do this would be to wire an A-B switch so you could choose the stat you wanted to control the system at a given point in time. If you want to average temperatures between two areas you need to look at Tekmar ot others with averaging capabilities.

A thermostat is basically a switch and switching the closet lite on from the basement might seem like a good idea but....

    Yep.

That is, I'm assuming that you want either thermostat to call for heat when it's cold...

    what is the goal?

If the goal is to have the 2nd on control the heat in a specific room or area of the house it will not work without zoning. If you want which ever is in a colder area to turn on the boiler then wire in parallel but if you want the one in the warmer area to control the boiler then wire in series.

    Totaline

Totaline has a thermostat that you can take from room to room and use it. It is like a cordless phone, has a base receiver and a handset. The handset is the actual switch and can be used in any room.

  • Here's a site which has different types of remote thermostats

I haven't used one myself so can't recommend any. You might want to follow up on each manufacturer and read the literature especially the I&O manual.
