either one will work. be sure to grab nut squarely on wrench pads. probably need a 14 " or 18 " wrench

    replacing radiator shut off valve

    hi everyone!
i need to replace a leaky radiator shut off valve. I know this thing's been there for decades.

What do you recommend the best tool to take it out?
a crescent wrench or a pipe wrench?

the thing is about 1 1/2 diameter...
    thanks

    But Keith....

She said, "replace", not, "remove and destroy the possibility of replacement".

Janice, use not one but two pipe wrenches. One to stabilize (a "Backing Wrench") and the other to do the moving. More to it than that, so get a pro if in any doubt.

The danger is loosening joints you cannot get to....

are you sure you cannot repair the valve?

most likely you will have to remove the "spud" [which is mated to the valve] which is screwed into the end of the radiator. in addition you will have to removed the valve without accidently unscrewing the pipe below.

valves are repairable. in most cases they just need repacking with graphite string.--nbc

no, i need to loosen the spud and retighten it with the teflon glue. im guessing its whats causing the water leak due to worn or untight fit.

so crescent wrench or pipe wrench?

    thank you so much
