New Steam Boiler High-Pitched Whine

My plumber installed a PeerlessBoiler Series 63/64 gas boiler last year. I've finally gotten the radiators to heat evenly thanks to Dan. Since day one when the boiler fires it emits this really high-pitched squeal that hurts my ears. My plumber says he doesn't hear it but I don't know how he can't. I can hear it upstairs and when I'm in the basement it's painful. I have good hearing, but not THAT good! Any ideas? Could this be a serious problem? Thanks.

sounds like a harmonics look to see if there is a pipe rubbing against wood or metal its not harmfull just a nuasence

    particularly

if it is an oil burner, the pipe feeding the burner from the tank.

Your plumber might not hear it, if it's really high frequency. Some of us older folk don't hear that high anymore...

    eh? What's that you say?

    boiler noise

I installed a peerless 63 05 boiler last week and have a high pitch whistle when running. If i close the gas cock a little it stops but that is no good because it reduces the volume of gas to burner. I checked gas pressure at gas valve and at burner both ok. After speaking with peerless they are shipping me new orifices for burner. I should get them early next week and see if it works and let you know.

we have a peerless 211 and it also emits a high pitched whine when firing at 50% (or is is 75%?).

i assumed it was just a harmless harmonics issue.. but reading what people have posted here i'm getting a bit concerned that i means something needs fixing.. did peerless say anything else about why they are shipping you replacement materials?

    boiler noise

peerless said it might be a burr in a orifice. The whistle from this boiler isnt dangerous just annoying.
  • peerless tech support

there is good tech support at peerless, with live people who are close to our level of expertise [they may have even revived some "dead men" to answer the phone!] when i spoke to them last year, i thought i heard the sound of chains in the background. 610-369-3208

it's amazing that the normally low gas pressures could make this noise.--nbc

Thanks everyone. I'm handy but I don't think I'm up to changing burrs in my orifice. :D Let me know if that works and I'll get on the horn and talk to one o' them ol' live (dead) people at Peerless and see if they can send me parts for my plumber for the future. The poor guy has gone to Iraq. This doesn't sound serious so I'll sit tight and get some ear plugs or something.

I had one that sounded like a dry bearing spinning down. Turned out to be a sand hole in the casting and the steam Very minute escaping into the chamber was making the noise.
