    I use

DesignCad 3D Max18 (I've used it for everything from a $10,000,000 waste water treatment plant to my plans for my own house to (don't laugh) my HO model railroad) -- price is very very reasonable, it's AutoCad compatible (but doesn't cost like AutoCad). Very very stable, very easy to learn... available from www.upperspace.com (they're the ones that make it).

Use Visio. Mostly for small work, Control and piping. Short learning curve, good price. Lots of Stencils available for piping and wiring or can easily make up your own with the basic circles, squares, rectangles, etc. Have worked with Autocad in the past. It is a good product but too big, bulky and pricey for what I do. Haven't tried Autocad lite

    Ditto...

We use Visio in our office. I used Visio to design my summer home.

    classroom

Mark - would it be suitable for the classroom as well? we touch on hydronics in second year plumbing tech training - adding the "auto cad" would compliment the program nicely.
