Hoffman Radiator Valves

Browsing the library the other day and looking at the Hoffman catalogue. Came across the comment that the radiator valves have metallic packing, and can be turned easily with one finger -- or something like that. Well, no. At least not mine. Turned, with some difficulty, with a wrench, perhaps -- which makes me nervous.
Anyone know if there is a way to adjust or lube these things so they turn more easily? Hate to fiddle, as I a firm believer in if it ain't broke, don't fix it -- and we rarely have need to adjust a valve, but...
It would be nice to be able to do so without spraining a wrist.
Thoughts, anyone?
