just don't do it. Sooner or later the gasoline fumes in the tank WILL go boom.

    outside,above ground tank

Have customer that is mixing 50 gallons of gasoline with 450 gallons of #2 fuel oil in an outside tank. He is trying to keep fuel thin enough to flow without buying any #1. Warm air furnace approx. 40 yrs old. What will happen to this mixture? will it stay mixed or will it seperate? Burner lockedout twice, but has burned 250 gallons through already. -10 F outside temp.

Gasoline fires a bit different than fuel oil....

it is not the best plan...

put a half a cap of gasoline on a ground fire, things will go different quick....

fuel oil might douse the fire ,however,.... even though it could be used to douse fires it generally isn't the fluid of choice when doing so....

mixing gas and no 2 fuel

not a good idea tell him to add a quART OF DENATURED ALCOHOL INSTEAD
  • Gas & Fuel mixture

    VERY VERY BAD idea.

Fuel oil weighs approximately 7.2 lbs/gal. Gas weighs approximately 6 lbs/gal. After time the lighter fuel will stratify to the top of the gas/oil mix.

The gas vapors will fill the top of the tank. They will be susceptible to ignition by any spark or open flame.

More of a problem is when the tank gets lower; he could be burning a much greater percentage of gasoline in the mix.

Picture a 45 second primary when the fuel oil ignites after about 40 seconds of vapor filling the furnace. Makes quite a "pop" but otherwise not a big problem.

Now, put 40 seconds of gasoline vapor in and ignite the atomized and vaporized gasoline after after 40 seconds.

You will find the pieces of that furnace in the rubble of what was the house.
