water hammer or clanking in one pipe steam system

from experience... it doesn't have to be a long piece of pipe pitched the wrong way to make an awful racket. Look at all the pipes... also, the sound telegraphs throughout the system, making it harder to find. Check the level on all the horizontal (more or less!) runs -- every single one -- and get them pitched right. Bet it'll stop making noises.

I have an old one pipe steam system that is very noisy when producing heat, its like a metalic sound, like someone hitting the pipes with a steel hammer i have changed all the main vents and local baseboard radiator vents also, no change Any ideas????0 -
That's steam meeting standing water.
You've probably got a backpitched pipe somewhere in the system.
Find it. Straighten it out. Support it. Your system will quiet down.
