This is my 2nd profession my first calling was as a trained Chef. Had to quit that one once I got married and had kids. I started out in a medium sized plumbing shop that did hot water heat. Got my plumbing licence and started to do boiler work. I have not used my plumbing licence in quite a long time as the hot water heating side of the business has caught me up in the challenges that it can pose. Best dam move Ive ever made. On a day to day basis I am the department head of the boiler division of a large HVAC contractor here in the Denver metro area.

but don't practice the trade any more. Strictly hydronics. But had it not been for plumbing, I wouldn't have developed an interest in hydronics.

for almost 40 years with some wet heat background. I only do "special" requests now as most of my work is at a computer doing plumbing estimates.

It's been a great run, in a good field, with a few more years to go.

Wish I had a site like this in 69 when I started.

I find that most people knocking the plumbing trade are not smart enough to take part in it. Sure, we get dirty sometimes, it is part of the job. If you are not tough enough to handle it do something easier. I have been a plumber for almost 30 years and it was the best decision I ever made. I am a forth generation plumber. My great grandfather used to work from the trolleys.

I don't know what I am. Hydronics, Steam, and Boiler service is all I have done since the day I graduated high school ten years ago.. I have had to knock tin, and plumb houses along the way to stay busy in Hydronics though. It wasn't all that long ago that there wasn't enough work for a guy to stay busy doing Hydronics full time!

    Shoulda went inna Navy

Started Plumbing and Hydronics in 1972. Worked awhile as commercial Tin Knocker and commercial Plumbing. Now working by myself as Mechanical Contractor doing both Plumbing and Hydronics. Navy seems like a good place for younger person to get a start in this field.

    Heating and cooling only

All types of heating from radiant panels, using any surface that can be tubed, to standard baseboard and cast iron rads. Any heat source, gas, oil, solid fuel etc.
Forced air, tin knocking, ground source heat pumps, whatever it takes.

Wish we could do hydronic work only but this is mainly a forced air market.

I usually can't keep up with the heating work so I don't know why I would get into plumbing also.

EDIT: I must be getting pretty good a selling wet heat because we've only done one new F/A installation this year.

    I was.....

born on the banks of the Mississippi and one time, my friend Huck and I built a raft, and the rest is history.

I was also a communications guy in the Army, I am still a work in progress as a hydronician. My previous 17 years experience was as a plumbing wholesaler that did system design. I subscribe to the Robert Bean theory of Farm Club/Pro Club. I cut my teeth on some small projects for system design and have been trying to improve on everything from then on.

Of the mechanical contracting industry, from out houses to cooling ponds at steam power plants.Family business for twenty plus years doing plumbing and wet heating work (hands on) and pushing HVAC crews as a project foreman.

Have master plumbing license in Wisconsin, have had master plumber's licenses in Minnesota, Michigan and Georgia. Love to put things together that coduct fluids and gases especially the world's most precious resource H2O.

Left family business in 1987 to bounce around a little, have never been unemployed, never had a workmen comp claim and never get bored.

Have the utmost respect for those who have served, do serve and plan to serve and protect this great nation. Have had two apprentices who had Naval experience.Have worked with at least 15 journeymen who were in the Navy.
As you can see I am getting to be a fossil fart yet I am no where near ready to quit this great industry after only 38 years.

Networking face to face and via this electronic contraption have exposed me to some of the best plumbing, wet heating,HVAC and industry professionals in the world!

Other than that I'm just a poor white boy trying to get ahead! ;)

    Well I'm right here

Never been a plumber, but I have the utmost respect for anyone in these and other trades. Had I not taken the paths that I have, working with pipes is a direction I am sure that I would have enjoyed. I am not sure that my abilities would have kept me gainfully employed in the trade, but that's another story!

My life before OSHA mostly dealt with safety stuff in manufacturing mainly with punch presses and other machinery designing and supplying systems to keep people from losing body parts. Now I get to SO many more types of places that it is always interesting. Lately, my group has been spending lots of time at the 35W bridge working with loads of people trying to prevent more injuries in a fantastically dangerous worksite.

    Thanks for asking.
