I felt I aleast owed you that much if I was going continue to question your math. It is not that I don't beleive your math is incorrect and I would love to learn it. I simply believe we are our worst enemy when it comes to saving anything when it comes to vanity ie SUV's. I have two diesel trucks, the first is a F350 with a 7.3L diesel and the second is a Dodge Sprinter with a 5 cylinder engine. The ford diesel is to big for the truck, it's the same engine that you can find in most 6 wheel 20 plus ton payload truck. So even though it is a diesel it still is a bad design (On the lot I couldn't resist the pretty chrome rims). The Sprinter on the other hand saves me about $40.00 per a fill up (26 gal to 35 gal) and gets over 30% better miles per gallon (21 compared to 14). The large auto manufactures KNOW they can build a better fuel effiecnt engine it's just we don't want it enough so why should they build it. I can for about $5,000.00 soup-up the F-350 and get more horsepower and better gas mileage, but I have to wait until the factory warraty is up. So, when you say just build more power sources what guarantees do I as a comsumer have that they as a supplier won't screw it up? Non unless I speak with my wallet, then they will start to listen. It's just like RADIANT heating more comfort lower operating costs, But that's exspensive (homeowner). People want somebody else to pay for it even if is the goverment what they don't realize is0 -

People want somebody else to pay for it even if is the goverment what they don't realize is you may not pay for it directly but you WILL pay for it. What do you think the cost of those free energy pin wheels would be IF everyone had one in their own back yard and how would they operate with that many out there. We have to start somewhere and I believe it is with our consuption and not the supply.
On another note saw a program on Discovery about oil supply I believe in CA. It said they have enough oil to meet our demands, but because it is mixed with dirt it is an exspensive process to extract. They have to soak dirt in hot water to separate the oil. Don't know how true it is but I'm wondering if any one eles saw this show.0 -

The Show...
... would have been on the Alberta Oil Sands. They've "upgraded" the name - it used to be the Alberta Tar Sands. The Indians used to use it to caulk their canoes, so I suspect "tar" would actually be a more accurate name. Huge deposits, but it doesn't just flow out of the ground by itself. Some operations dig it out (strip mine), some are moving to steam assisted gravity drainage (SAGD). They drill two wells. One is for steam injection, which drops the viscosity of the oil to the point where it will flow to the collection line. Another new spin is to pump solvent in, then recover the solvent when the oil is processed. There's a lot of work/energy involved in extracting & processing this oil, so the price per barrel has to be high enough to justify the adventure.
I'm not just advocation building MORE power plants. Many if not most of the coal & nuke ones that are in service have got a LOT of miles on them. They need to be REPLACED sooner, rather then later just to keep our heads above water. It's been 25 years since they built a new coal generating station here in Ontario. It takes 10 years from saying "Let's build a plant", until it's commissioned, and on-line. 20 years for a nuke. I think most of North America is on the edge of some nasty power shortages, and even more serious cost increases. Windmills simply cannot do the job at hand.
A few years ago, I was pretty keen on windmill power, so I did some reading. What I found was, they're a LOT of money for the little bit of power you get, even with a strong wind ALL the time - which never happens. You can't get enough juice to even come close to powering your house. I found a book on brake drum windmill generators, so you can build your own out of an old Ford F 250 drum, but you'll only get enough juice to run a low wattage light bulb or a radio. It's cheap to build & free to operate but that only helps if it can actually do the job at hand. Turn off one 60 watt bulb, and you've just more than equalled the power output of that windmill. Plus, you've saved the installation cost.
You're running diesels. Good work.0 -

very interesting \"energy plan for america\" in development now
A friend sent me this.. the interesting thing is it's be developed by regular people, experts in various areas (business, economics, energy tech, environment issues), not politicians or industry lobbyists.
http://www.eurotrib.com/files/3/060518_EA_2020_v5_FINAL.pdf
It's being written by self-professed progressives, yet it righly calls nuclear and coal production as major keys to our future...
So much of what's in there is just plain smart.
