No, nice and clean. They were just grey cast iron color. It was nice and dry and it brushed out cleanly.

Peerless heat exchanger pins fail
When I cleaned my 4-year old Peerless WBV04 hot water boiler last week there were 6 of the cast iron heat exchanger pins laying in the bottom of the combustion chamber. Why would those pop off? Is that a problem with the Peerless casting? The loss of 6 pins isn't great but if it continuse it decreases the heat transfer capabilities. It is a cold start boiler but I don't know if that's a factor. Peerless markets it that way and I have other cold starts that are much older and never had a problem. Has anyone seen this and is there anything I can do to prevent further pin loss?0 -
Never seen it, but
Were the little nipples as I call them very rusted? Maybe excessive condensation inside on the casting?0 -
pins
Dave,
We just assembled a Weil Mclain 80 series boiler that I noticed had some issues with the pins.
A few of the pins looked like they were snapped off before the metal had a chance to cool off.
