"freaaaashh baaaakedd breaaaadd"!!!
wafting through the air.
i don't think i could've handled it, i would've been, fired, arrested, an perhaps commited , full of "crumbs
and butter". ;)
way cool header too.. darn my mouth is watering.
cheers, db

I had this made up for a recent steam job
in a Franciscan Friary. The Burnham V905 required only a 4" header, but it just wouldn't be me to not go a little crazy...besides, the old header was a 6" monster that weighed over 500 pounds. We had short notice and we weren't going to be able to get or even afford to 6" steam fiitings. We had this prefabbed at a Industrial pipe supply. Saved a lot of money and time and worked out well. The old HB Smith Mills boiler was down in a ten foot deep pit. It was a real adventure getting the old one out and the new one in. We evn had to remove the old wood platform above it and rebuild a sturdier one. The Friars bake bread every few days and the boiler pit was in the back of the kitchen, so we tried to work around them. We got lots of free bread too. Mad Dog

Nice Header!
Way Cool.
Been a long time since I've done anything like that.
Your work is pure art.0 -
Nice work Mad Dog!
Quite the challenge too. How are they getting the oil to that bad boy? (please tell me there is an adjacent room with a tank in it) Chris0 -
Great Work MAttdog
You have a reason to be WAY proud.
I won't even mention the bread cause they would'nt even get me out of there.
I really like the 45 off the header, nice thought and those are sweet looking king valves. Where do you find them ?
Those Friars got the right guy !!!!
Really Nice Woof, Woof.
Scott

I thought a weld up unit could be done. Wow, it looks nice and clean. Why the 45s ? nice looking job.0 -
Bud
That header is AWESOME. It looks like it took some serious BFI to get the old monster out and slide the new baby in. You sir, are chocked full of the dead men spirit.

As Usual
Matt,
As usual, you never cease to amaze us all. Mr. Holohan was indeed right on point (as usual) when he dedicated "We Got Steam Heat" to you.
I think that Dan's Next Book, "How to Fit Ten Pound of **** in a Five Pound Bag", will also be dedicated to you, based on this fine piece of workmanship. (kidding, Dan)0 -
Nice job,
want to do a few in Boston?
I know plenty of guys that will let you have them...LOL!0 -
Wow, manly header
That is indeed a manly header, stop valves on all the runs too! Just the perfect picture to show someone who says drop headers are too much work. Sticking to the high skill high dollar part of the business makes so much sense as a business plan. Is there an oil leak sensor down in that pit? And, I would love to see a pic of the venting.0 -
Great Work, Matt!
I really like the header you put in, and the photo of you behind it to give it some scale. Between the drop header and the 10' pit, you ought to have some very, very dry steam in there. The unions and the valves are a joy to behold, I imagine those valves do not come cheap but will be greatly valued if anyone has to work on part of the system while the rest continues to operate.
Congratulations, I'm sure the Friars are going to be very, very happy with your work.0 -
Wow
just when we think we've seen it all, Mad Dog comes up with another work of art.
Nice Job!
"Steamhead"0 -
sorry Gene
No offense, that book would have to be dedicated to Ron Jr.
Mad Dog, what an awesome job. It's just a joy to look at that completed header.

Really great job in the tightest of spaces
How did you get that old beast out of there , and the new one down ? Some type of winch ?
About the new header - how heavy was it ? Was it made here on the Island ? We've done some big 6 inch before , but had the welders come in and make the final connections . Your header looks so much better than the welds .
Does the boiler do any food work or is it strictly for heat ?
I see it's working off of oil . Guess I got some competition out here .... Gotta bring up my A game now . Keep up the great work Matt .0 -
Very True Jerry
Ron Jr. Definitely has that reputation.
He did a great job out at the college and there weren't even any space restrictions. I was thinking about building a staircase over his head so he could squeeeeeeze the drop header in while still feeling like he was in Levittown.0 -
With the 4\" single drop header feeding it
and all the unions and 45s...there is plenty o' room for expansion. I used 45s so I could pitch the S#$#$%%^$&*^&*& outta it! Thanks Mad Dog

Hopefully the oil company will install one
I'll let them know. This old boiler was in a severe state of neglect. In fact! It was firing up to 25 psi and NOT EVEN BLOWING THE relief valve. Mud legs and most passages were blocked like a fat man's arteries. Just before I looked at it for the first time, they had sent a "tech" out who proclaimed it was in perfect working order. The brothers said: "but why does the guage read 25 psi...isn't that too high?" He replied: "look! its at zero now!" Yes they exasperatingly replied!!!!!!! but its not even running!!!!!! After that, they found me via my Find a Pro ad. Mad Dog

Winch - some heavy-a!! 1 1/4 rope...an ol' Grumman box truck to lower thru an kitchen window. Three man realy team. We pulled out the old sections and bazooka and lower ed the new V-9 sections down one at a time. Can't say enough good things about the V-9 and how easy it goes together. The new header was punk compared to the old beast...I could bear-hug it.....probably weighed around 250 or so... alightweight compared to the original. Made at Long Island Pipe in Garden cIty- on short notice too! Ask for John Tall - an old family friend. Thanks Ron - you wouldve loved this job. We also got sections of the friary hot that hadn't been in years. Especially the chapel.. Mad Dog

I've got some pics of soem other "pit" jobs we've done I just haven't posted I'll be happy to be the "pit boss." Th thing that amazes me...and I commented on as we were doing these jobs...is: "wow! what's changed in over 125 years with these big steamers...not much...still takes very manly men to yank thenm out without losing limbs and appendages and very manly men to turn the wrenches to repipe them. I feel very at home with the Dead Men...in fact I am proud to call myself...a dead man walking. " Thanks Man

Outstanding work!
Glad to hear it was done in the summertime. I can't imagine doing work like that under the gun. You and the crew must have been sick of ladders after that one ;-)

V905
We installed a 905 last winter at a mansion in pleasantville N.Y. on a two pipe vapor system. That boiler purrs at 10 ounces. Great choice of boiler and a great job. P.S. Have you heard from our friend up here in westchester?

Bazooka!
Nice job Mad Dog. Most guys would run from a pit job like that. Its reassuring to see such a competent man in a position of trust. Keep up the good work.

It may be titled" 1/2 lb of steam in an old 10 lb system".
It would only be fitting to our esteemed host. Chris0 -
Thanks Tommy!!!!!
Yes we were. The original ladder was wood and went down at a 90 angle. Rickety to say the least. My trusty assistant Don donated his old alumunum 12 footer for posterity. YOU too wouldve loved this job tom. I still rememeber the one you did with 4" brass OSY valves! Mad Dog
