Wet Return

Is there any ratio to the amount of water your boiler holds and the amount of water in the wet return before your Hartford loop? I've got a Weil-McLean EG-65 Steam Boiler and the current wet return must be about 50ft long. I am replumbing part of the drops and dry returns and installing a missing Main Vent and didn't know how small I could go on the wet return length. My returns are 2" giving me 5.75ft/gal.

a few tips
Hi J.D.,
You don't want to see how small in diameter to make a wet return. Rather, you want to size it generously. It carries the water back to the boiler and can easily become clogged with the debris of the system if sized too small, causing flooding problems and/or nuisance low water cutoffs of the burner.
As far as the length, the water in the wet return beyond the Hartford connection is not part of the boiler water volume. Be sure to add cleanouts to the wet return piping for future maintenance.

and if you intend to remove the plugs from those cleanouts----make sure the plugs are brass.0 -
Wet Return Length
Thanks for the information. My plan was only to reduce the length of the wet return before the Hartford Loop, not the0
