I know generators have come a long way and are not the ideal operation wise, but as temporary power will they satisfactorily do the job? Any opinions welcome.

in general yes, but
extra precautions are needed like a generator with a built in voltage regulator and naturally surge protection on the PC side0 -
You still have a gap
usually about 8-10 seconds before E-power is up and stabilized. That is why you need a UPS (APC is one common brand with Belkin and others.)
I was turned on to Brickwall.com by Perry and that is our new standard for surge protection. I do not know if they also have a line of UPS equipment but I was very impressed by their service and attitude. (Example- unasked, they refunded quick shipping charges because they would be sending the unit I bought from NJ not CA where they are.) How cool.
You may still need surge protection regardless. But you definitely need instant power to carry you over the generator hump. Get a UPS.0 -
UPS
furthermore, a really good UPS will give you steady 60 hz -- which will keep your PC much happierBr. Jamie, osb
