Boiler won't shut off

Hello People,

My customer has a gas fired steam boiler that runs basically non-stop.

There is a remote temperature sensor in the top floor apartment, (only three family building) and a separate gas water heater.

I checked for wires that could be touching, the thermostat in the boiler room appears to be operating correctly. At the suggestion of a Heating pro, (I'm a Plumber), after he checked the system, I installed a new temperature sensor and unfortunately, we have the same problem of the boiler running continuously.

The pressure control shuts down the burner at about a half pound but it will start up again once the system pressure drops. The tenants don't seem to mind the heat, after all they can just open the windows...

Please advise & Thanks to all who take the time to reply.

have you completely disconnected the wiring to the remote sensor at the boiler? And does it still do it? If so, there is something in boiler controls somewhere which is shorted -- and not being there and without a wiring diagram, can't help much. If disconnecting the wiring to the remote sensor solves the problem, you have a short in that line. You'd be surprised (maybe not) how common that is -- misplaced staple, nail, who knows. You may need to run a new line (have fun...)

    Thanks.
The Heating guy told me that he disconnected the wires leading to the remote sensor, (in the boiler room) and the boiler shut off, that's why I installed a new heat sensor.

Maybe your theory is right, there is a defect with the wire leading from the thermostat in the boiler room to the sensor on the top floor.
