Labrador 1, Pit Bull 0

I am heartbroken to have to report that our two dogs got into it again this morning.
By the time I got there, my Lab & Pit were both deathly latched onto each other & weren't going to let go. We beat them, and my neighbour, Mason got badly bitten on the arm trying to separate them.
My other neighbour, Richard came with a 12 gauge prepared for the worst.
One had to go. I had the gun & asked Mason which dog? He said shoot my Zeus (the Pit) I had to shoot him from about 2 ft, he died instantly.
My dog is badly hurt, but I think he'll be ok.
Pray for Mason, he just lost his freind of 3 yrs, and I feel awful.
I wish to God this didn't have to happen.
I hope the rest of the year is better than today.
Brian.

Yellow Lab 1, Pit Bull 0
I will never underestimate the Labrador breed again, never.
Dog fights are scary, especially when you think YOUR dog may be in trouble (because Lab's are docile, right, WRONG).
These two dogs ordinarily get along just fine. The Pit even sleeps in Butch's (radiantly heated) kennel when it's cold
I live way out in the deer-filled woods, and Butch dragged a cut-up carcase into the back yard and begins chomping on it.
15 min's ago, I hear snarling and squealing and thrashing right at my back door. The Pit had tried to take the carcase, huge mistake!
By the time I got out there, axe handle in tow, and gun very close by, Butch was very clearly in charge. Both dogs are about 75lb's, but Butch simply grabbed Zeus as quick as lightning around the throat. It was like a Judo hip-throw, he just got his shoulder under the Pit, flung him over the top, and slammed him on his back, never letting go.
The Pit's owner came running and grabbed him. I just said "good boy, Butch, let him go" and he did, just like that.
All the above, took no more than 25-30 seconds, amazing.
BTW, the other precious thing in the photo is my Sweetie, Autumn Elizabeth, who I helped deliver 8 yrs 8 mth's ago. 4' 4" already. She can shoot a bow & run a trotline, coz a country girl will survive :O) But has no interest in NASCAR. That's for you John
Both dogs protect her like she's Royalty, never more than 5 ft away from her. Which reminds me, gotta go pick her up.
Later fella's, watch out for Lab's
P.S. Sorry about huge photo, new camera & MS picture-it software. It did say resize to e-mail size, Oh well.0 -
Glad everything is Ok Brian.....................................
My father - an animal lover and lifelong horseman always told me: "Don't ever trust an animal [completely]." They copuld be the sweetest dog, but one day they get sick and they can bite you out of fear. A childhood friend had a Beautiful large Alsatian (German Shepard) that everyone loved. One day he got clipped by a car. As his owner ran over to his injured buddy (broken leg he lived) he tried to pet him. Blackie went crazy and mauled gramps arm - over 50 stitches. They kept the dog, but never let him out with the public again. Pit Bulls are born brawlers and LIVE to fight. The difference between them and almost all other breeds with the exception of similar breeds like the Neopolitan Mastiff, Tibetan Mastiff, and Presa Carnario (THe breed that bit Diane Whipple to death in her own hallway)is that these dogs are not satisfied until their victim is dead. Other dog's will attack and hold. The PIt Bull and the aforementioned breeds don't know when to stop. I would NEVER own own. The owners of these breeds will assure you its "just how they are raised." True enough, but its ferocity is right under the surface and ready to rear its ugly head at the wrong time. I have met some fine Staffordshire Terriers and pits that were indeed great dogs - but they are rare. I'm glad your dog is around to keep an eye on your Beautiful daughter. Pit owners love to tell you how invincible the breed is. They are as tough as they come, but yours is not the first Victory-over-pit story I have heard. These mutts pictured are some of the nicest you'll ever meet - good boys and absolutely huge...much bigger than they appear. Both Direct from German breeders. Give that boy a bone. Glad everything worked out. Mad Dog

I'll never underestimate any breed of dog when it's protecting a treat or a pup. People really aren't much different...0 -
No bad breeds !
Only dufus owners who try to teach them the way THEY want them to behave.
Honest to God, the meanest dog I've ever run across was a cocker spaniel ! Nasty as the day was long. Fortunatenly, it was also dumb as a stump. After the 3rd nip and the owner not responding to my wishes that she put it in another locked room...I had it in "my own special way" after it drew blood.
Needless to say, her thermostat sat in pieces on the stand in the hallway until she called another company. 3 times was 2 X too many to ask, and I wasn't going back there.
Biggest problems I've had since then....Leaners ! You know the type..big as the sky, and just HAVE to lean on you while you work. I'll take it over the nippy little $*&^% dogs anyday!
Labs are definately the best! Chris0 -
I respectfully disagree Chris
Yes, the little toy breeds are the nastiest, but cannot do much damage. Those breeds I mentioned are very dangerous and have as very high incidence of vicious attacks. I have worked around animals most of my life and know several breeders and companies that do K-9 Security work and attack training. I also know a few guys that work animal control in The County. Its true. Pit bulls - in the vast majority of cases are a "bad Breed." Its not just my opinion. Mad Dog

pitbull 1 cat zero..
Had a great barn cat around for a year.. she would slip into my garage when I left at 5:30 am.. and would slip out when the wife backed out at 7.. Then slip back in at 3 when I pulled in and back out at 5:30 pm when wife got home.. Great cat never once got stranded inside the garage.. one day my two young daughters were playing with her on the front porch.. stray pitbull comes up grabs the cat from my girls and literally kills it right before their eyes. The girls came in screaming.. I ran out with a rifle.. yelled at the dog he dropped the cat, ran out about 150 feet into the front yard andlaid down like a lion waiting on his prey.. well Right between the eyes I hit him.he never took another step.. He could have just as easily mauled or killed one of my daughters. had a lady that had heard I had shot a pitbull stop by.. I told her this was about a one year old dog.. she said hers was six years old and missing... I told her if I see it in my yard.. I will put it with the year old Pit...
Our county has a Leash law. Keep em tied up on your property or confined to your yard.. they are fine.. But come onto my land and they will meet their Makers.0 -
Great Dane
I assume by "leaners- big as the sky" you mean Great Dane's? I have a female Dane, and she is the best dog ever! Very nice temperament, and yes, always want's to lean on you! Would never hurt anybody, even if they took away food. Just want's to always be near people- a giant baby!!!0 -
The German Mastiff aka Great Dane...............................
can be moody , territorial and occasionally mean, but do you ever hear of one mauling anyone. I never have. I have known 5 Danes intimately in my life. 3 were absolute sweethearts, 1 could be aggressive at times but would never attack if you stayed still. The last was not to be trusted around kids. She bit a few times, but never mauled anyone. Mad Dog

You're right Mad Dog
I agree with your assessment of the pit bull and other "fighting" dogs. Personally, I don't even like Rottweillers in general. A bit too slobbery and crazy although I'm sure as you say there are some great ones.
I had a German Shepherd as a boy and think they are great. That beast you have there is MASSIVE. Look at the chest on 'im. Nothing worse though than a poodle. Talk about genetic mutants. We call 'em "rat-dogs" around our house. Yapping barking no goods. Give me a giant hound any time! Kevin0 -
Good for you Eric
That needs to happen to a lot more and then people would keep em out of your kid's face. And that's coming from a guy who loves dogs. You don't know which stray is the killer and which one is the darling. It's not worth gambling your childrens complexion or skull to find out. If the owners love the mutt, keep em at home. Kevin0 -
> No bad breeds !
Close but not quite right, it should state: There ARE bad breeds and we (Humans) are to blame. Most of the breeds that are high risk dogs have had this bred into them by idiots.
One other thing everybody needs to remember: Dogs are ANIMALS and as such have no reasoning power. They operate on instinct and what has been bred/drilled into them.
Case in point: One of the nicest dogs I had ever met was my moms Collie (Now as a side note I pretty much detest Collies due to the excessive in-breeding but this one was ok) yet one day my youngest daughter (6 or 7 at the time, long ago) reached over to pet the dog and he grabbed her by the face.
I have absolutely no idea why, we were on the front porch and there was no stress, no loud voices, nothing. The dog just flipped. He let go as soon as the adults yelled at him but the damage was done and my daughter bears the scars to this day. I told my mom to have him put down and that my kids would not be back until he was gone. She refused and said I was being un-reasonable....
Within a week he (the dog) had picked a fight with the wrong truck and lost...0 -
breeding cuts deeper than most people understand
Chris,
Most people have no idea how deep bred training goes. My brother owned a Rotweiller (sadly now way overbeed). They were originally bred by the romans as cow herders. They then became cart dogs in the 17th century. I have seen Rots that have never seen a cow in their lives instinctively herd cows. My brother's dog didn't have cows, so every now and then he would practice on me. 2000 years later!
So when you breed a dog to fight, especially to fight to the death, I don't think that dog can ever be trusted. Like Mad Dog said, you just don't know when the breeding might kick in. I am also of the opinion that any dog trained to attack/kill should never be bred afterwards. It's just not something you want in any blood lines.
This is completely different that the dog's natural instinct to protect it's pack. This can be quite viscious if the dog feels a great threat, but will stop when the situation breaks.
It used to be the rule that when a big dog bit when unprovoked, it was put down no questions asked. It seems that now that has changed, and more and more bad dogs are out there. sigh.

And the Rotties are still much less in the news than pits
The German Gov't still uses them for crowd control, They muzzle them, but will unleash them in to a crowd where the will seek out the worst agitators, knock them to the ground with **** Butkus-like ferocity and then stand over them till they are cuffed. Mad Dog

I had a black lab try and kill me once...
Literally. We
d just repaired the RH system in the home. The HO had to leacve before we finished and asked us to let the dogs in the garage before we left. I looked at ther dogs (black lab and golden retreiver) and told her "No problem"...
Famous last words. When I tried to coax the lab out of the laundry room where it was "feelin' the heat" from the floor, it literally LUNGED at me, headed for my throat!
Fortunately, I caught the flying dog in the chest with my knee, said 'YOU SOB, YOU CAN JUST STAY IN THE HOUSE" and left.
I called the HO the next day to tell the HO what had happened. She was shocked. Said the dog had NEVER been aggressive to anyone for anything.
Just goes to show you, ANY breed can snap for whatever reason. This one didn't like the cold garage floor versus the newly WARM laundry room floor....
As for poodles, I agree regarding the dust mop ankle nippers, but a friend of mine holds the current AKC Field Trials Champion, and guess what, it's a STANDARD poodle...
Beat the retreivers and pointers HANDS DOWN!!
Whooda thunk.
I wanted to breed my golden with a standard poodle, but wasn't sure if it would be a goodle or a polden :-)
I have absolutely no use for pit bulls. Regardless of how they were raised, there is a deep instinct to kill attached to that dogs psyche.

My Take on Dogs
If you have a dog you are responsible. I look forward to getting a lab when we get into the new house on 9 acres. Right now I don't have one.
My neighbor behind me (1/4 acre lots) had a pit bull. He is a preacher. Nice guy. He told me all about how great the dog was and wouldn't hurt a fly. We have two kids and a hood full of more. I simply let him know that I would help him keep and eye on his dog but that he needed to know should ever get off the rope. (Poor dog stayed tied to a tree) and I saw teeth, hair standing, growling or any form of agression, I would shoot it dead right then, regardless of who's yard it was in.
If your dog threatens a person it should be shot on site. I don't trust a pit any further my aim. (And that is quite good by the way) Personally I would just a soon see the breed banned.0 -
Pit Buls
Here in Ontario pit bulls and several like breeds have been restricted. As of August 2005 you cannot breed, buy or sell
these animals. Current owners have to muzzle and leash their dogs when in public.
I also underatand that several European countries have similiar laws.
There was a long debate over the fairness of this law as many dog lovers felt the law should target the irresponsible owner and not the dog.
Personnally, I was VERY glad to see the law passed.
All dogs can bite but not all bites are equal.0 -
Breeding
Too bad we can't license people breeding along with the dog breeding. Get some control on the neighbors as well as their dogs....0 -

We had a few Labs
as well as many of my friends , and I believe the yellows are more agressive than the darker colored Labs . But like others said , you never know what dog will just snap and revert to past breeding or genetic instinct . We have a yellow now , looks exactly like yours , and he is way more agressive than the black lab we had before him . I just had him down at the sump today ( as rural as this area gets ) , and some guy had his 2 year old pit bull down there . Of course the pit bull was trying to intimidate the other dogs . My 95 lb. nut put him in his place real quick .
You have a real cute kid , Brian . Excuse my ignorance , but what is a trot line ?0 -
Trotline, troutline
A string or area of floating milk jugs with baited hooks dragging on the bottom for mass catfish'n :O) I think ?
I was just quoting Hank Williams Jr.
As of now, there's a $10 bounty on Zeus the Pit. Apparently he bared a tooth at my tractor-riding neighbour. Always a gun on that tractor. It won't be long.
Still getting into impossible places, Ron?
That's a monster Yellow Lab, Ron. They can crunch through 2" bones the way we eat cornflakes.
Later, Mr. Shoehorn.
Regards, Brian.

Poodles
Poodles were the original retriever and that was 350 years ago - long before flat-coats, curly-coats, labs and goldens. The instincts are still there but it takes a bit of work to field them. It's nice to see one do well in the field, this one must love swimming. Mine's great in swamps but never liked the big open water retrieves.0 -
Here some real killers. Will lick you to death if you are not careful.0 -
Hey thanx Joe!
now here in BC, there is a huge amount of those bu**ers arriving every day! One of my journeyman, when i was an apprentice, had a PB. This dog was just great as a puppy. After six months, it woul;d not allow me to get out of my car to get into the work van. I hate those dogs!
And Mad dog, we have actually had more people attacked by Rotty's here in the last few years then any other breed. They are the choice of the weed growers now, and I guess they raise them mean. It always seems to be the innocent child that gets ripped apart, though, never the drug dealers!

A diamond in the rough!
I guess my last dog must have been a diamond in the rough then! We lost her last December 16th and yes she was a Pit Bull. Since Pits are not recognized by the AKC she could not be shown in the show rink but she could be shown in obedience contests. She won many blue ribbons and was an excellent pet and companion to myself, my wife, and my two children.
Don't get me wrong, I understand there are a huge amount of bad pits out there but there is a huge amount of bad pit owners out there.
Food for thought!
In all fairness, therefore, it must be noted that:
Any dog, treated harshly or trained to attack, may bite a person. Any dog can be turned into a dangerous dog. The owner most often is responsible -- not the breed, and not the dog.
An irresponsible owner or dog handler might create a situation that places another person in danger by a dog, without the dog itself being dangerous, as in the case of the Pomeranian that killed the infant (see above).
Any individual dog may be a good, loving pet, even though its breed is considered to be likely to bite. A responsible owner can win the love and respect of a dog, no matter its breed. One cannot look at an individual dog, recognize its breed, and then state whether or not it is going to attack. (www.dogbitelaw.com)
If you have Nationwide Homeowners you may not own the following breeds. (In no order)
1. American Pit Bull Terrier
2. Doberman Pincer
3. German Shepard
4. Rottweiler
5. Cane Corso
6. Husky
7. Staffordshire Terrier
8. Chows0 -
Go Eric
My wife was attacked by a Pit Bull 2 years ago. She was out doing a walk when the dog charged her from more then 100 yards away. The dog crossed two public streets to get to her, he then bite her on the leg three times. My wife escaped by climbing on top of a snow bank where the dog was slowed down in his attack. The attacked ended when the owner of the pit bull grabed him and my wife in her fear broke thru the neighbors front door. My wife's only request to the animal control officer was that the dog be put down and her medical bills paid. The owners complyed with both requests, Me I wanted to Sue the Bast%#@. J.Lockard0 -

I just can't eat a whole one.
A sweet young neighborhoodl girl who is a cat lover just told me she saw that on a t-shirt. I like cats fine, but they sure are the brunt of a lot of jokes. Kevin0 -
I had some divine intervention...
... some years ago when I was out jogging next to a big athletic field. Suddenly, I heard the characteristic "pftt, pftt" of fast-approaching dog paws on asphalt to see a bulldog making a beeline for me.
Luckily, he was crossing a busy highway with 2-lanes in either direction. A white shape and a bang later, the bulldog was lying in the center strip with nothing moving but the tail. No owner in sight, I reported the dead dog at the nearby gas station.
I was lucky indeed.0 -
THat must have been a sight.
Olde English Bulldogs are rarely aggressive like that, but in the the 1700-1800s they were used in Bull-baiting exhibitions. They were so tough and aggressive that they would grab a bull by his snout and not let go. Fortunately, that has pretty much been bred out of them. An aggressive Bulldog has been called a "living bear trap" and puppies that show any aggressiveness need to be put on a crash course in obedience training. Mad Dog

Officer Aims For Pit Bull, Accidentally Shoots Fiance
Woman's Police Powers Suspended
POSTED: 6:54 am EST December 29, 2005
GARY, Ind. -- An auxiliary police officer accidentally shot her fiance in the leg while defending herself from a charging pit bull, authorities said.
The officer, Tracey Berry, will be required to be retrained on firearms, Deputy Chief Jeff Kumorek said Wednesday. Berry's police powers have been temporarily suspended in the meantime, he said.
"Witness accounts support her statement that the dog was attacking her," Kumorek said.
Berry was scheduled to work security for a basketball tournament Monday at Gary West High School and was walking toward the south entrance when a pit bull began running toward her, police said. The closest door was locked, keeping her from seeking shelter inside, and another auxiliary officer's effort to use his car to block the dog was unsuccessful.
At that point, Kumorek said Berry shot at the dog and hit her fiance, 40-year-old Andre Senter, who was nearby. Senter, who was hit in the leg, was treated at The Methodist Hospitals in Gary and released.
"Based on the investigation we believe it's an accidental shooting. But if there is a deficiency in her firearms training, then we need to address that," Kumorek said. "We want to retrain her with her weapon before we put her back on the street.0 -
