    looking for a comparison

    One pipe steam radiator vents:

both the Gorton D and the Jacobus/Maid O' Mist D are advertised as having the "venting capacity of 27 air valves." However Gorton is twice as expensive.

    Are they really comparable?

    jacobus

i have used jacobus for over forty years and never had a problem. the price has always been right for frugal customers. interchangeable size orifaces can also be helpful when balancing systems. on mains GORTON is king. an oldtimer [ older than me !! ] once told me jacobus & gorton were once partners.

The difference between the Gorton's and the Maid O Mist is that the Gorton has it's insides made out of brass. The Maid O Mist's insides are made out of plastic.

    You will find...

...that you get what you pay for.

I don't think this is the place to save money if you are only buying 10 or 20 valves.

And yes, the Gorton valves have a beautifully machined brass float in them and are soldered together. The Gorton's temperature sensor is made by Texas Instrument.

Maid-O'-Mist uses a plastic float and the case is crimped together.

They both share patents and are of similar design.

What about Hoffman? I bought 3 #1A vents the other day and one had a pin hole defect in the bottom and blew steam & water. Was not sealed...they gave me some sight glass bushings for free for the inconvenience...

    I learned

when I took apart a maid-o-mist... That particular vent only worked a few days in my system..

Anyway the float thing was cheap crumbly plastic...

Never again will I buy the Home Despot crap...

I've had the same Maid-O-Mist valves on my system for over two years now without any problems.

It was a cold and stormy night and I was over the girlfriends house. No parts at hand and the heat was just turned on that day for the heating season. One vent after the other was not working either stuck open or closed. In a fit of anger I went to the big orange den of inequity and bought a dozen maid of mists just to get me through the weekend. Odd thing happened they all worked fine and are 2 years old and still doing fine. I would not buy them for a paying customer but they worked this time. If I had to put my name on the job I would go with Gorton or Hoffman.
