Honda Unveils CHP System for Houses

TORRANCE, Calif.—American Honda Motor Company and Massachusetts-based Climate Energy are working together on a system that uses microcombined heat and power (MCHP) cogeneration technology to provide heat and electricity to residences. The system, which combines a small cogeneration unit and a furnace or boiler, will be marketed as an alternative to conventional space heating and electric power in new and existing homes. The unit consists of a small natural gas-powered internal combustion engine developed specifically for this application, and a small electrical generation system. The system reportedly will cost about $8,000 and is expected to be offered to U.S. consumers next year. Honda says that some 15,000 similar units are already in use in Japan.
