Honda Unveils CHP System for Houses
TORRANCE, Calif.American Honda Motor Company and Massachusetts-based Climate Energy are working together on a system that uses microcombined heat and power (MCHP) cogeneration technology to provide heat and electricity to residences. The system, which combines a small cogeneration unit and a furnace or boiler, will be marketed as an alternative to conventional space heating and electric power in new and existing homes. The unit consists of a small natural gas-powered internal combustion engine developed specifically for this application, and a small electrical generation system. The system reportedly will cost about $8,000 and is expected to be offered to U.S. consumers next year. Honda says that some 15,000 similar units are already in use in Japan.

But
the gas has to come from somewhere, so you're still locked into the utility's network. If they could make this thing run on some sort of renewable energy source, they'd really have something!
I agree that Japan is way ahead of us in this area though.
