Heating element for old cast iron radiators?

Options
My question is can you install a electric heating element in a old water cast iron radiator and fill it with oil and heat it up by using a electric heating element? If so will it blow up or is it safe?
thanks
Ernest

There is a company that makes exactly what you are talking about. I think they actually fill them with a water antifreeze mix.

Not a US company, but it is in Canada so I would think you could get them in this country?

I contacted them but they will not sale the element....they will only fix & repair them when you send them the entire radiator. Wish someone in the US would do this.

The reason we cannot sell elements is that the units need to be tested in factory with the safety device. As it is electric UL/CSA tests are required. We pick up and deliver to USA ourself or use transport company. Will be glad to help. Trish

I for one really appreciate @Ecorad 's approach on this one! I can think of way too many things to go wrong with the install to ever let it get into the hands of the general public!

Tap the radiator for a block heater. Tap it for P&T relief. Don't overfill the radiator. Nuts to UL/CSA and shlepping cast iron.

Even better, just drill a relief hole and forget T&P.
