We recently installed a new Burnham mega Steam, very happy with the performance, it was nice to dial in a steam boiler at just over 86%!!! Unfortunatly I did find a glitch the hard way. As part of the new install I replaced the old merc. with a digital round. 3 weeks later recieved a call from H.O. stateing stat was blank.(Sunday of the playoff games) Coaxed my electritian to take the call but when he arived it was fine? I pulled up the wiring diagrams on line and fiqured out the safety circuit kills the power to the transformer. Asked sparky to call the boiler, and sure enough when the pressuretrol cuts out SO DOES THE TRANSFORMER AND NEW DIGITAL STAT. I never noticed this on install because I was in the boiler room checking the cycles. Just wanted to give everyone a HEADS-UP BEFORE THE FREAKED OUT H.O. I spoke to Burnham, hopefully they make the changes.
Also wanted to say thanks to everyone, I've been hanging around here for a few years and learned alot. One of my New Years resolutions was to start posting.(almost Feb.) I hope this can save someone some trouble.

If you start and stop the boiler
thru a standard circulator relay such as a RA89 or R845, with the relay contacts switching the thermostat terminals on the boiler, your thermostat will remain live when the Mega-Steam shuts down on pressure.

First of all, thanks for installing a Burnham Megasteam boiler and we're confident it will provide your customer with many, many years of efficient operation. I also want to thank you for bringing to light the power stealing thermostat issue. Over the past several years we have pretty much incorporated isolation relays into the circuitry of all of our steam boilers such as the Independence Gas, V-8 Oil and MST "Megasteam" Oil boilers to isolate the thermostat from the inner circuitry of the boiler. On the oil-fired boilers this was done to be able to send a 120 volt signal to the Low Water Cutoff to activate it's internal timer for the built-in "Foam Check" feature it is equipped with.
I will be meeting later this week with our Engineering Dept. and we will be discussing what you have been so kind to point out that the transformer on the isolation relay is deenergized when the limit pressure is reached. Thanks again for bringing this to our attention. Communication in this business is very important and more often than not things like this are not brought up when they occur.

Curious
What did you see for stack temps?0 -
Glenn
thanks for following up on this. Thats a nice packaged boiler, seems like a shame to have to add a relay just to power a stat.
Cunner, without pulling the file I think the gross stack temp was 330.0 -
Cool
...... literally. That's some impressive efficiency. Is it quiet?0 -

Glenn , 2 questions
Any chance of an in house presentation like the one they gave us for the V8 and the MPO ? Our sales department wants to get up to speed on these boilers so we can start offering them .
And can the Megasteam be used as a water boiler ? The internal coil option can come in handy for some homes that don't have room for a tank .
Thanks Glenn .0 -
Ron
I will initiate the request for inhouse training on the MST "Megasteam" for you. There has been some thought to using the MST as a hot water boiler but I'm not entirely sure if that will happen any time soon. This is due to the different construction present inside the boiler in the steam dome area as compared to the MPO water boiler. I'll check into it whle I'm in Lancaster this week.

I spoke to Engineering about this yesterday and they have already worked out a somewhat simple solution to the transformer being interrupted. As I stated, all of our steam boilers have been this way for some time now but this thermostat issue has just come up. I would imagine it has something to do with the Mercury ban for use in the thermostats and the popularity of digital readouts now.
This wiring modification should happen shortly as soon as harnesses can be made and the I&O manuals modified and reprinted. Thanks again for bringing this to light.

Thats great news, its nice when a Manf. resolves a problem instead of putting it on the back burner!

We had our \"in house\" for the Mega Steam
Nyah, Nyah. We had our "in house months ago.
Learned all about Chlorides too.

April 4th
Frank,
We are due in Baltimore with some training on this and other products on April 4th as part of the "Burnham Spring Training" Tour. Keep an eye out for more on this on our web site and in all of the Trade Publications.

Actually......
You will be seeing Ron Beck and Greg there. I probably will not be there, but you never know! We have 14 cities in the Mid-Atlantic Region scheduled for the "Spring Training Tour" during April, May and June and later on this summer this will hit another 15 cities in NY, NJ, CT, VT, HH, ME and MA. I'll more than likely be involved with the second swing into New England.
