How do you guys feel about a vaporstat?

As Steamhead said (and as I wish I learned years ago when I owned steam systems), a pound will do it.
Think of a controller measuring in pounds, 0.5 to 5.0 range. Not a lot of integer choices there, is there?
Like measuring pharmaceuticals by the kilogram when milligrams are far more accurate... that pressure scale runs 0-16 ounces... accurately.

I'm thinking of getting one but I'm not sure it is a necessity. How would the wiring schematic be for the vaporstat in series with a pressuretrol and how do both run the pressure limit together? I've seen it many times on some boiler install pics. This is one pipe steam here.0 -
I like Vaporstats
there is really no need to pressurize a residential steam system to more than a pound. When you run at Vaporstat pressures- less than a pound- the steam is in a more expanded state, so the boiler can fill the system without having to generate as much steam.
We ordered one of the new mercury-free Vaporstats today. We hope to try it out soon, and will report how well it works.

If I get one should I replace the presuretrol that came with the Burnham set-up or hook it up next to it? (Can't remember the model, h1404f?)

You're thinking of
our larger boiler installs, using CSD-1 control setups. These require an "operating" pressure control (the Vaporstat) and a manual-reset high limit (a Pressuretrol set at 2 pounds or so) and each one needs its own pigtail.
On an ordinary residential steam boiler, just replace the Pressuretrol (L404 in your case) with the Vaporstat. Make sure the pigtail is not plugged.

Yes they are
but I haven't tried one out yet. The new one's model number is L408J1009. It would probably be a special-order item.
