IMHO there is no good way to integrate an outdoor boiler into your life unless you incorporate a brazed plate heat exchanger, live where you have no neighbors, and promise to only use the boiler when you are able to run it exclusively at high fire.

Chek out the numerous wood heat references that a Google search brings to light regarding outdoor boilers.

    Does anyone have a good piping diagram on an open system (outdoor wood boiler) tying in with a closed system (gas boiler).

    Even with increased fuel costs, wood boilers will eventually be banned. Their poor efficiency (btu/cord in actual use) and emissions will kill them. Particulates emitted vs BTU out makes coal look good.

    I think biomass boilers (pellets) solve many of the problems of using cordwood.
