Glowcore GB0907 exhaust venting

My Glowcore, which came from a frustated builder as part of a pair he wanted shed of, is still humming along after 16 years. In fact, we just added another zone to it for the second floor office area of our shop.
Unfortunately, the sister boiler (for spare parts)that came with this one was smashed when the snow crushed my quonset hut some years ago.
If anyone wants to dispose of any Glowcores or their parts, I may be interested, just respond to this post.

Glowcore Exhaust venting

I have a Glowcore GB0907 system installed in 1987 and the exhaust section (pvc pipe) of it appears to have broken down, where the pvc pipe has deformed in the area where the exhaust leaves the unit. It has been 18 years from its intial install, but I wanted to ask if this is normal over that length of time. Also, does anyone still sell glow core products? I am having someone come look at this.
Last question. Since this unit is in a craw space about 40" in height on a cement floor, are there any other recommended systems out there that will fit a crawl space should it die.

Glow Core

It is amazing your Glow Core is still running. It is definitely the exception! I do not know if they are still being manufactured. For awhile, a company in Texas bought the rights and were manufacturing them but I do not know if that is still the case.

It appears that PVC was used on the venting. To my knowledge, CPVC was the only approved venting material for this boiler. That may explain the discoloration. I doubt the black union in the flue was "factory approved" either.

It may be time to investigate a replacement before the cold weather hits. If you are looking for a PVC vented 90+ condensing boiler, check out the Prestige by Triangle Tube and the HTP Munchkin, among other offerings currently available to you. Good Luck! -DF

Dan, Thank you for your reply. I found my manual and for those who may have GlowCore systems out there, the manual does say to use Sch 40 PVC piping 2". Dan I will check out your source suggestions for a future system.

if I remember correctly

the first ten feet was supposed to be CPVC & then PVC was permitted.

Thank you also for your input. I am hoping the Texas company is still in business for some addtional input. I belive Dan is correct on the union being wrong. My parts manual calls out Bushing Red 2" PVC x 1" NPT. It looks to me like the union held the heat and caused the connection to sag. Thank you both for your input.

From my experience with these boilers and getting parts ......

RUN !!

Stop looking at replacement parts and start looking at a New Boiler. Once you start looking at these things everything becomes an issuie. Gaskets, gas valve, sensors ect...

Glow Core Exhaust

Hi Dan and all who commented on this thread.

You were all kind enough to comment on my Glow Core system concerning its exhaust, so I thought I would share the outcome with you.

The Combustion chamber of the Glow Core system was determined to be breaking down because my exhaust temperatures were melting my newly installed CPVC piping So, I decided to steer away from the Glow Core and invest in a new boiler.
I purchased a Buderus system GB142/30 which fits nicely in my 4' cement floor crawl space, and I am quite pleased it once I got over the sticker shock. I also educated myself on the importance of a Carbon monoxide detector and bought a few for the house.

Anyway, I wanted to thank you all for your feeback and input on this forum. A safe and Happy New Year to all and your families - Bob

glowcore a.c. inc. 1-800-676-4546 henry bates is the parts guy. don't hold your breath waiting for parts,i waited from sept 30 to dec 12 for a heat exchanger. called back a couple weeks later & said to forget the igniter,can't wait till spring for parts!!!. got the igniter from someplace else & got it going on the 15th. not bad for being in syracuse area huh? told the customer the next major failure i won't fix it. gotta scrap it.

the outcome. I put in several Glowcores and celebrated when the last one was erased from my past when the house it was in was demolished to be replaced by a townhouse community. The Buderus GB is a sweet machine and will serve you well. I've seen the expression of sticker shock on the customers face. It's a good investment though.
