building a thermal trap

Met with a customer today that is getting a little "ghost flow" through a few areas on a huge geothermal job. He installed a thermal trap on the supply line to a coil. Does the distance of horizontal pipe between the drop and the rise back up affect the trap? I was taught to keep these as close as possible. Opinions?

Look at
Siggy's December 05 article "Harvey's Horseshoe" for a good explanation nof the how and whys. I've had limited sucess with thermal drops, personally, but I did miss some of the fine details.
Is a soft seat spring check out of the question?

I think that the rise is key. I have used them on steam cond. wells but not in a hot water system. I think that at least a foot of drop and rise would be sufficient.0 -

The heat sink we use on holby mixing valves is 27 " and has worked well for close to one hundred years.0
