NAPA should be in the Plumbing Supply business. They don't have your item today - they get it by 8:30 AM TOMORROW.

SHIPPING now...I might as well order the $#@m thing on line myself and get it faster..$#@#% &^%*#,@#^%$#<*,And probly get it right the first time, SUPPLY houses aint what they use to be !!!!! there now..WHATS that thing and maybe we can get one houses....AUGHHHHH...0 -
It happens
Supply houses play a game of see how little we can carryso we don't have too much inventory. I just had to pay 200 dollars shipping on some 5/8 multicore because the supply house only carrys 300 foot rolls. The advantage to going up to 5/8 tubing on radiant floors is so you can go up to 400 feet per loop. Duh! It's hard because the supply houses don't carry what's not often used. Using the internet might be a viable option. WW

Happens EVERY time with anything but "white bread" in my town.
Just three weeks ago needed a right angle union for a radiator. One of the OWNERS of the OLD plumbing company told me "no such thing". They stock angle radiator VALVES, but no plain unions! They'd even ordered these for me before (after I found it in their book). And yes, shipping was on the statement.
If it weren't for the fact that they throw me an occasional "problem job" (either the installation or the customer) I would have just ordered on-line. Yes, I actually enjoy "problem jobs".

passing the buck
I like when they tell me they don't have something that I got there a month before. Sometimes I go in the back with the dopes and show them where I found it last time.0 -
I am
Always giving my supply houses a hard time for not having any parts. Good thing they are not in the grocery store business, They would not have enough product to make dinner. With R.E. Michels and Ferguson Enterprizes we have some fairly large supply firms. For a little two truck shop like me to have more inventory then them is unreal. Best Wishes J.Lockard0 -
The killer
is that I try to give them business & support the local economy (rather than go online & ship my dollars far away). That only means backorders locally when I could get what I need tomorrow or the next day (or even next week - that would even be an improvement!) if I use the 'net (& I'm not talking exotic here). Plus the shipping charge plus the 'professional recomendation' that I really need to replace that obsolete steam with a nice HEAT PUMP!0 -
the reality
ya have to do what is best for your buisness. That may mean sticking with the local supply house,(tough when you are in a small market)or going via the internet, or going to a larger supply house in a larger market and getting deliveries once a week or so. Alot of them have weekly routes and will deliver for nada. You will prolly have to do a combination of all three. As we all know, it is price and availability and service and support etc, etc, etc. I have been in a small market where we worked six weeks out for anything just a little bit out of the ordinary, but am now in a big market and it's not that much better. Seems like whatever you want, it is not a that branch, but the one across town. We often have to go to two or three differant suppliers to get what we want. One specilizes in residential, one in commercial, one in hydronics, one in hvac and another in remodel. Always something to -itch about.0 -
In Defense of Supply Houses
We carry thousands upon thousands of items, can we have everything every single day of the year? No. The contractors who stock up always have a safety cushion in which we can refill their order. We are very receptive to feedback from our customers. If they tell us what they think we should have in stock we will try to accomodate them. Special orders, you are responsible for freight. Work with your supply house, talk to your salesperson (they make a living from your sales) Remember during the Holidays the Manufacturers & Reps are in a slow down mode, this hurts the suppliers and yes, the contractor. If anyone can get a letter in Tokyo by 10:30 tomorrow morning, somebody should have been able to get you your part. ASAP. Everyone runs out of items from time, it's the people who can compensate & substitute that will be successful...

Anyone experience price gouging lately?
Right after Katrina one supply house sent out memos regarding shortages and transportation costs etc; followed by immediate monster price increases. Would you keep going back to a supply house that gets twice the price of its half mile away competitor? And what's this wholesale sign mean? No-account customers lined up at the counter, prices for ABS twice as high as Home Center, $75 dollar restocking charges because just about everything is "special order". Is the END drawing near?0 -
I guess
I think I must be lucky then. I have a supply house that has an incredible stock on hand. They try and keep what sell's close to hand. I do on occasion run into the item that no one has seen or used and they do an exceptional job on getting it for me. In most cases one of the guy's will drop it at my house or the office on his way through town.0 -
lchmb, may I ask whom you use for a supplier??0 -
The Golden Rule
applies here to.
I am in a medium to large market with plenty of supply houses.
The supply houses I chose to deal with alway's follow up. Even if you don't have the answer I want to hear, please tell me the truth!

Nice Excuse

Lame Comeback
Since you sell membranes, vinyl panning etc. How much of a price increase did you pound the suppliers (and yes, the contractors) after Katrina? Aren't most Manufacturers & Reps golfing today? Oh, you weren't invited...0
