Disassembling an IBR Arcoliner

Options
IBR stands for "Institute of Boiler and Radiator Manufacturers", an industry group which is now part of GAMA (Gas Appliance Manufacturers Association).

The Arcoliner was made by the "American Radiator and Standard Sanitary Corporation", now known as American-Standard. Sometime in the early 1970s A-S sold their boiler line to Burnham.

    Disassembling a IBR Arcoliner

    Gentlemen and Ladies,
The previous owners of our house left us a little present in the basement. An IBR Arcoliner Number WO551 Series 4BJ4.

How do I disassemble it and does it contain asbestos? I see what appears to be mineral wool under the outside sheet metal. I have a plasma cutter if that becomes necessary.

    Thanks LarryC

    A choice

It was probably never removed in order to save the money of the asbestos removal fees.

    a-stuff

I didn't think that the Arcoliners had the A-stuff for insulation, although the early ones had a cardboard based material under the jacket.

    Cardboard based material:

Take that cardboard based material to an asbestos remediation specialist for testing and it will probably pass as asbestos. Same as that cardboard like stuff inside the asbestos pipe insulation.
