WM SGO vs. Burnham V8 Series for one pipe steam

I have to say, go with the W+M for steam if they back them up. Please save yourself headaches by staying away from the Burnham steamers. It will rot out, and the manufacturer will tell you that they won't honor the warranty because it 'oxidized above the waterline' and that 'oxygen should not get into the system' -- ask anyone who knows even the slightest about steam and it's a system that's open to the atmosphere! Please, buy something other than Burnham for steam. You'll be happy you did.

WM vs. Burnham?
I am considering getting a new boiler this summer and am trying to decide on a WM SGO vs. a Burnham V8. This will be used with one pipe steam and oil w/ ~511 Net IBR connected load (calculations need to be confirmed). At some point I may want to add a radiant floor zone based on the instructions that Dan had written up on the web site.
My oil company swears by WM and I've heard really good things about them. Is there a reason that I would want a Burnham instead?
Cost to operate, ability to clean, and how well it's built/how long it will last are key factors in the decision.
Is there another company I should be looking at?0 -
You answered your own Question
your oil company swears by them....they will be the one who will be taking care of it for you, if thats the case you want go with the W+M,the oil company knows the in's and out's of that brand boiler. they are all very good boilers!!..David

which one
I agree. Weil is always my choice for a steamer and we do alot of them. If that's what your oil company recommends, go for it.0 -
Burnham?
I like Burnhams because I own them and also have to clean them. They are very easy to access and clean. I also like the iron push nipples. Can't say I've seen many rubber push nipples 50+ years old.
But everyone has an opinion. I've seen posted several Burnhams with casting problems.
As most say, the service is as important as the product; both are first grade companies that stand behind their products and will probably be around for a long long time.

I'm a homeowner who just bought a burnham v84S even though my oil company recommended WM. My decision was based entirely on what I've read in this forum and my respect for the people here.0 -
Burnham
I think that it is similar to Ford Vs. Chevy. But for us-- cast iron nipples, great customer service and ease of cleaning mean Burnham is the one.

steam boiler
I install alot of Weil-McLain steam and water boilers. They are easy to install and disassemble to get into house. If you disassemble a Burnham boiler you will have to use a pneumatic kit to put back together. We have done more warranty Burnham boilers than any other boiler on the market.I would recommend you listen to your oil company.I work for an oil company, so i see alot of boilers.0
