covering asbestos pipes on the cheap
I have an old boiler and asbestos pipes. The boiler is 105 yrs old and still have the watts controls on them.(it's outlasted 1 timken boiler and 2 wm boilers I had installed on my first floor apt.) I would love to removed the asbestos pipe covering but I'm not going to pay $3000.00 (avg for my area) to remove it and install new insulation. The abestos is still in good condition but the covering is good to fair. I read somewhere that plastic wrap works ok. But plastic and hot pipes don't mix well. I've used rewettable glass cloth on the boiler, but I don't want to use it on the pipes. (just in case leakes need to be repaired) I need something easy on and off. I have two thoughts. Aluminum foil and aluminum flashing (rolled first) Aluminum foil works great. What would be the pro's and con's ? I'm looking for coverings that don't have to be cut off later. Gotta love steam!0
