Ed, I'm hoping that the Long Beach in your name refers to the one in Long Island NY. And if that is the case I am also hooping that you are willing to come out to Queens. I have been looking for a steam expert to look and work on my one-pipe oil system and have had no luck. I really want someone other than the oil company service guys because I can't but feel that there is a clear conflict of interest there. Why would the oil company want to make my system more efficient???

I saw Steadhead's response to the guy that posted the thread about the $1400 gas bill and I would love to be able to get my system running as efficiently as possible so that all my money doesn't go up the chimney so to speak.

Steamhead:

If you know of any reputable dead men that work the New York City area please let me know. I would really appreciate it.

Efficiency. . .

You are correct in assuming that an oil company has a very unique interest in the efficiency of your boiler. We've seen numerous acts of sabotage inflicted upon oil fired equipment which were intended to double or triple fuel consumption. Efficiency is what we do best. Drop us an email!

Are you kidding ?

I can understand a homeowner believing an oil company might not have their best interests in mind when it comes to efficiency ( until we prove to them why their wrong ) , but someone in the trade ?

Hmm , a companywide policy to keep boilers tuned badly ...... to sell more oil ? Nevermind that this policy would lead to more service calls and pontential lawsuits from puffbacks , freezeups and the like . They got that extra 50 gallons a year in their tanks !!!

I don't know which companies you allege to use this practice , but I do know that is the farthest thing from the truth with the major oil companies on Long Island , Queens , Brooklyn , Manhattan , anywhere . Nevermind that is it just wrong ethically and morally , the competition between oil co's is too fierce to lose good customers .

Every chance we get we always explain to the customer how they can save fuel by upgrading their 50 year old beastie . We are encouraged by management to do this . This philosphy is widespread between all the major companies .

Sure theres a few bad apples out there that wont vac out a boiler that desperately needs it . But this is a far cry from a whole fleet of servicemen who are specifically told to keep em sooty and burning gobs of oil .

Not everyone is a Ron Jr.

Based on my very limited experience, it all depends on the company. A good oil company will take an active interest in the longevity and efficiency of the oil equipment out there because that will maximize customer retention and long-term profits. Other companies expect the technician to spend no more than 1/4 hour to clean and adjust the boiler. As a homeowner, I have been on the receiving end of both kinds of these extremes.

That said, it's easy enough for a interested HO to figure out which technicians are trained and allowed to go about setting the systems up properly. Ask up front whether the service person will use a combustion gas analyzer, etc. and then observe them. It should be apparent who will do a great job and who won't.

A bit overstated Me thinks...........................

Whilst this is certainly true with some oil companies. The 21st Century-thinking ones that want to halt the slide of oil-to-gas conversions actively encourage their customers to upgrade to more efficient equipment - even though they will use less oil. These companies understand that the customer will be even more loyal and will spread the word. One such company that I know of is Napco Fuel of Lindenhurst, Long Island. There are a medium-sized family run business that actually does care about their customers fuel bills and actually does annual cleanings and tune-ups that several companies pay lip service to. WE send new customers their way whenever we can - especially when they are unhappy with the current companies that aren't really doing the cleanings. Mad Dog

The scary thing...

... I spoke with Stephen and he's delt with an oil company who we all know as being one of the more progressive and informed ones whom he claims never vacuumed his boiler or set it up with instruments.

Didn't ask him if his basement was flooded or anything, or if he kept a pit bull down there. Maybe just a bad apple serviceman. I did remind him how competitive the oil business was and recommended he get on the phone with the owner.
