Storage Tank Vacuum Relief

Recently we worked on a Hot Water Storage tank at a nusing home that had a vacuum relief valve on the top of the HW storage tank. The valve had an 1-1/2" inlet into the tank with a 1/2" outlet for the overflow. This particular valve is probably 20 years old and is starting to corrode at the assembly points. There are vacuum relief valves on the cold water inlet line for the tank. What I'm not sure about is if this old vacuum relif valve is needed for the tank or if I can eliminate it. The brand name on the valve is: VACO. No other information on the valve was available. Does any body have any information on this type of valve.

    vacumm relief

    Never heard of that brand but as to whether or not it needs to be there, check your local plumbing code. Hot water storage tanks usually fall under plumbing and our Maine Code requires a vacuum relief on ANY storage tank to prevent syphoning.
