HEAT TIMER model EPC for steam boiler operation in NYC

Please let me know if anyone has any idea who might repair refurbish, rebuild or sell parts for HEAT TIMER model EPC for steam boiler operation in NYC. Ours is old and works most of the time but is getting a little quarky and they want over a thousand bucks for a brand new one which we don't have just to get through this heat season.

HEAT TIMER model EPC for steam boiler operation in NYC

Thanks for your interest. We’re in a small residential building in Manhattan.

There are a lot of different symptoms but the main one is- once in a while after the boiler runs 20-30 minutes and satisfies the indoor sensor ,the yellow light flips on and the boiler turns immediately off, rather than then continuing 10 or 20 more min on based on the ABC setting.

One other strange thing is that occasionally, even when it’s cold and the weather calls for heat, the cycling dial gets stuck on “0” and stops turning around with the boiler off and the red and yellow light’s OFF . If we then push the dial a minute past one, BAM! The yellow light comes on, and the boiler comes on and goes through the ON portion of the ABC cycle and continues cycling like it’s supposed to.

It’s as though the heat timer needs some sort of electric jolt to keep it doing its thing, kind of like a person.
  • The second scenario

sounds like a dirty potentiometer. The first could be several things. There are no new repair parts for the EPC. Heat-Timer is finicky about even repairing the current EPU. Will only look @ panels w/ Ser. Nos. starting w/ V or W.

Methinks it's time to bite the bullet.

a couple of major problems we run into are do to panels without a dedicated ground and sensors installed with unshielded wire -or outdoor sensors filled with water -----if you need a panel --these issues need to be adressed --sensors should be ohmed and verify the thermistors are good -- wires for L1-L2 replaced and most times powered from a seperate circuit --sensor wires changed to 2 cond.18 shielded shield grounded at panel only ---Heating & Burner on Walton --around 149th st bronx 1-718-665-0006 Terry --hes the man

wow. i guess we asked for it! we are still t shooting these issues and you are very helpful. for sensors should be ohmed and verify the thermistors are good, we have a fancy volt meter if that is the right thing but don't know which setting since there are so many to test with. is this do-able? also, our plumber suggested that since this baby is working well a lot of the time, its possible that theres nothing wrong and wet steam or condensate could be the culprit. if we put a bag of ice on the sensor or something can we force test its working when it gets stuck? just a wild guess. also, do you know if we can spray or clean a dirty potentiometer. we opened her up and are wondering if its near the mercury switch.

    call heat-timer

why not call heat-timer and they will come & repair or replace it ? that is what they do. and they give you a gaurantee. an unqualified person working on a sensitive control is ridiculous. bob nyc

Many times, a complicated control was installed to compensate for an unbalanced system. Check your system to make sure this is not the case with yours. If you look at the old testimonials for heat timer, you will see that the installation of the control coincided with various undoings of deferred maintenance, which accounted for most of the improvement in fuel use.

I think a thermostat with averaging sensors in the coldest parts of the building would perform as well. Naturally, your system has to be in good shape, with generous venting, allowing the steam to arrive at all radiators on a given floor at the same time.--NBC
